Mary Jane Xenakis was born and raised in New York City. Always interested in art, she began drawing and painting at an early age. On her way home from an art class in High School, she sold her first piece: a collage. Mary Jane went on to study art in college, but unable to get into the advanced classes due to overcrowding, she switched to education classes for Special Education.
Retiring in November 2009, Mary Jane moved to Cape Cod. After settling in, she started taking classes at the Cape Cod Cultural Center with Suzanne Packer in February 2010. Mary Jane has continued taking classes with Suzanne and with other instructors at both the Cultural Center and the Cape Cod Art Association. She joined the Yarmouth Art Guild in 2010, and as an active member, she was invited to join the Board of Directors and elected President of the Yarmouth Art Guild October 2012.
Other artistic endeavors include teaching classes in the art of Quilling at the Cultural Center and at the Yarmouth Senior Center. Quilling is also known as paper filigree and has been an art form since the creation of the first paper mill in 1320. Besides Quilling, Mary Jane also enjoys working with acrylics and watercolors, mono prints, white line woodcuts, collage, and photography. Mary Jane has run art activities for special needs groups at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, the Kennedy Donovan Center, and assisted in teaching Chinese Brush Painting to local youngsters at the Artists' Paintbox Gallery.
Mary Jane continues to exhibit her work at both the Cultural Center of Cape Cod and the Artists' Paintbox Gallery where she has sold original paintings as well as quilled cards and prints. Her work has also shown at the Miller-White Gallery in Dennis.
