Heidi Jon Schmidt, who has just released her novel
The House on Oyster Creek. Set amidst the tideflats of Wellfleet, the story features Charlotte Tradescome, a New York fashion writer who brings her family to Cape Cod to live in an inherited home. She begins to fall in love with the town, the sea, and one of the men who raises oysters outside her window.
The author will read from her work and be available to sign copies. Registration recommended.
Wednesday, September 1st at 11:00 a.m. In this 1951 adaptation of C.S. Forester's novel, Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn costar as an unlikely pair thrown together in German East Africa during the First World War. A gin-swilling riverboat owner is persuaded by a strait-laced missionary to use his boat to attack and enemy warship. Despite initial antagonism, the pair grow closer as their quest drags on.

Myles Marcus explores the world of whales with our audience. He'll survey the more than 75 species of whales, but concentrate on leviathans, or "giants of the sea." He'll discuss their migratory routes, feeding habits, behavior, longevity, evolution, reproduction, and the provocative mystery of strandings.
Myles Marcus is a Cape Cod Museum of Natural History trustee, program coordinator, and naturalist field guide. He is a former secondary school biology teacher and school administrator and served as a docent on a Provincetown whale watch ship during the summer of 2002.

Maybe you did some of these things when you were younger, but gave them up when you started working, got married, or raised children? Or maybe you have the urge for the first time to take a painting class or write a novel or a memoir about your life, but haven't a clue as to how to begin?
Come and meet new local author Harriet Rzetelny, who just released her novel Graveyard Blues. The author published her first short story at age 55 and now, over ten years later, has published her first novel. She will explain to our audience how she used her life experiences as a former singer, clinical social worker, mother and wife to create the characters and stories that became Graveyard Blues. She will offer practical suggestions on what to do when faced with that blank piece of paper or canvas and how to give yourself permission to do the work without feeling guilty.
Thursday, August 19 at 7:00 pmWetlands are special areas of land that benefit both people and wildlife.
Conservation Agent Paul Wightman will speak to our audience and take the mystery out of dealing with and living near a wetland. He will provide an overview of the Dennis Wetland By-Law and point out those activities near wetlands that require Conservation Commission approval. Issues addressed will include permit application requirements, tree removal, and landscaping within wetland buffer areas. As a community, the more we know the better position we’ll be in to preserve and protect our valuable wetlands.
